LODGE HISTORY

The origins of the Earl Shrewsbury Lodge were in Cannock, Staffordshire.

The Founders and Original Members of the Lodge were:

Bro. William Jones, Bro. James Taylor, Bro. John Lloyd Gibbons

Bro. Samuel Loxton, Bro. Joseph Newman, Bro. William Bayliss

and Bro. James Rowley

They received assistance of the Provincial Grand Master, the 19th Earl of Shrewsbury and 4th Earl Talbot, his Deputy, W. Bro. Frank James, a very distinguished Freemason. A Warrant approving the formation of the Lodge was granted by the Most Worshipful Grand Master H.R.H. the Prince of Wales and also signed by Lord Skelmersdale as Deputy Grand Master on 21st November, 1874.

The Consecration took place on 20th January, 1875, by the R.W. Provincial Grand Master, the 19th Earl of Shrewsbury and the 4th Earl Talbot.

During the early years the Lodge Meetings were held in the Public Rooms Cannock, in 1881, however, terms were agreed with the Local Board for the use of the large room at the Council Officers in Church Street. The offices in Church Street proved to be a happy venue for the Lodge until the outbreak of war in 1939.

Earl Shrewsbury Chapter No. 1520, was duly consecrated by E. Comp. Rev. Preby.  A. T. S. Talbot, M.A., R.D., M.E., Grand Superintendent and a former W. Master of the Lodge, assisted by Officers of Provincial Grand Chapter, at the New Hall, Cannock, on the 30th June, 1948.

The Lodge met for the first time at Taylor’s Café, Cannock, on 12th September, 1956, and in the new Lodge Room the following month.

The Lodge then moved to the new Masonic Hall, Aldridge in 1988.

The Lodge has now re-located to The Rugeley Masonic Centre, Penkridge
